The Sony Qualia product line is the super high-end of consumer electronics. There are/will be 19 products, but only four have been made public since June 2003:
004 – 6.2 megapixel home theater digital projector – $25,000
007 – Super Audio CD System – about $6,800
015 – 36-inch color monitor – $11,000
016 – 2.11 megapixel ultra-compact camera – $3,200
Up to now, the Qualia brand has been sold mostly in Japan. If you happen to be in the Ginza Sony Building, you can get the Qualia 016 on the fourth floor and then go downstairs to eat at Maxim’s. While you can get the 016 via dynamism.com, it will officially be launched in the U.S. this month. This camera is about the size of a (large) thumb, and uses the Memory Stick Duo format. Despite some minor problems with the 016, quality has been very good, and reviews have been excellent. Sales of the 016 are slow, at about 1 per day.
Some rumors have been about circulating about what the remaining 15 products might be. These rumors suggest that a 70inch rear-projection TV will be announced in June. While 70in seems small compared to the Mitsubishi WL-82913, if it’s a Qualia, then the quality will likely be superb. But more on this, and other Qualia products, later.
