Virtual Keyboards

by GadgetManiac on April 4, 2004

Virtual keyboards have been discussed & prototyped for years now, and they are finally here. VKB Inc. has begun shipping their product, which can be ordered through iBIZ Technology.

Vkb’s are miniature projectors that shine the image of a keyboard onto some flat surface and then capture & interpret the movements of your fingers as they hit the non-existent keys. Good for PDA’s, cell phones, tablets etc.

The concept is being extended to virtual mouses, touchpads, switches even entire control panels. Conceptually, virtually and in practice, they seem like a great, even an amazing, product.

Obviously virtual keyboards have been rendered obsolete by touchscreens. Still, I think they might sell well as a novelty product; it might be cool to turn your kitchen table into a keyboard every now and then.
