What exactly are you eating?

by GadgetManiac on April 4, 2004

Is your sushi-bar serving you “tu-no” (textured soy protein) instead of tuna? Concerned about MBM in cattle or fish feed? Wish to avoid pork or beef? Find out what you are eating with FoodExpert-ID, a new gadget for food and feed testing.

The FoodExpert-ID is based on the GeneChip, developed by Affymetrix, which supports 80,000 oligonucleotide probes specially designed by bioMérieux. The device can identify DNA from 12 mammals, 5 birds and 15 fish.
A magnified view of the fluorescence patterns from the 80,000 probes is shown above. The location, color and intensity of the light can be mapped back to the originating species.

I didn’t even know sushi bars served soy proteins instead of tuna sometimes — outrageous! I think a gadget that told you exactly what you’re eating would often come in handy, although in some situations you’re probably better off not knowing.
