A new study by NASA suggests that contrails from “air traffic, could account for nearly all of the warming observed over the United States”.
The study states that contrails can spread into extensive cirrus clouds that tend to warm the Earth, because they reflect less sunlight than the amount of heat they trap. This results in a net increase in air temperature.
The following satellite image shows a complex pattern of aircraft contrails over the southeastern United States during the morning of January 29, 2004. The contrails look like chalk marks on a blackboard.

The above image shows contrails resulting from air traffic in and around Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport, and the Disney World resort in central Florida, as well as traffic for Miami. Of the twenty busiest airports in the world, 14 are located in the U.S.
