Degree Confluence

August 16th, 2004

There’s a mildly interesting project going on over at Degree Confluence. They have people going around the world guided by GPS receivers and with digital cameras, taking images of those places where an integer degree of latitude meets an integer degree of longitude (e.g. 24°00′00″North & 27°00′00″East). Seems to be a kind of low-key version of geocaching for people with too much time on their hands.

In case you’ve ever wondered, the view from 24°N & 27°E looks like this:

Egypt at 24 degrees North and 27 degrees East

There are 21,541 confluences on the planet that are on dry land. Someone’s visited and photographed about 15% of them.
