HL2

Valve Software’s soon to be released Half-Life2 is an eagerly-awaited First Person Shooter PC-based game. The HL2 predecessor, Half-Life, won more than 50 game-of-the-year awards and sold more than 8M copies worldwide.

There are some amazing graphics over at Planet Half-Life, such as the following…

…not sure if this is a scene from Half-Life2 or a demonstration of its graphics engine. Anyway it sure looks like a photograph to me. The game’s rendering, physics and AI are controlled by the “Source Engine”. A good review of the features of the Source Engine can be found at this link. You will probably have to upgrade your graphics card to play this game.

Nobody knows for sure, but there is speculation that the game will be released on September 3rd.

What category of games do you think did more to advance graphics over the years: first-person shooters or sports titles?

I’d have a hard time choosing between the 2. In both cases, graphics have advanced from cartoonishness to photo-realism in a decade, and both genres seem equally popular.

I think sports games have the more impressive graphics. It’d seem harder to create video game characters that resemble real human beings. Shooters have an advantage in that their graphics can be more stylized.
