The NASA Morphing Project will develop airplanes which will be able to change shape in flight.
These morphing materials will be lightweight and flexible and thus allow wings that bend and twist like those of a bird in flight. This is a “long-term project”, which means that it will not happen any time soon. Nice concept and a nice mock-up pic.

Maybe at cruising altitude planes can expand and give us all some more legroom.
Or the planes could turn into giant cushions for easy landings when the air traffic controllers are asleep.
I think I’d wait a good long while after these planes are introduced to the public before I’d venture onto one myself.
