A newly-developed atomic clock, which is the size of a grain of rice, is accurate to within one second every 300 years. If it is ever commercialized, it should find many applications, and not just in your watch.

This new miniature atomic clock from NIST is an outstanding feat of engineering, mainly because of its very small size, but also because of its extremely low power consumption of less than 75 thousandths of a watt.

That is exciting. One application might be to make world records in athletic competitions even more precise.
I wonder if we’ll be seeing smartphones equipped with atomic clocks sometime soon.
