Pop vs. Soda

by GadgetManiac on August 7, 2004

This is an interesting map courtesy of East Central University in Oklahoma showing the geographic distribution of the generic names for soft drinks. The graphic depicts the use of the terms “pop“, “coke” and “soda” to decribe soft drinks in various parts of the USA.

The northern US is almost completely blue, which means that they refer to soft drinks as “Pop”. There seems to be an anomalous area centered on St. Louis MO -wonder what’s up with that.

My grandparents used to call it “tonic.”

Wasn’t it originally called “soda pop?” Somehow that phrase got fractured.

Calling all soda “coke” is like calling all footware “Nikes.”
