This is another addition to the Sony Qualia “best-of-the-best” product line. The new Qualia 005 is a 46-inch LCD TV expected to cost about 10K.
So, why buy a 005, you may ask? Simply put, the 005 will display a range of colors that you have not seen previously on an LCD TV or monitor.
Specifically, the 005 can display shades of green, yellow and red that no other TV can display. These new colors come from the use of ultra-pure light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to drive the backlight unit, instead of the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) that are used in most other LCDs. This improved range of colors or gamut is depicted by the orange triangle shown below. That gamut is significantly wider than that of a typical CCFL (red triangle).
Another feature is the remarkable 10millisecond pixel response time, which is a new high (low?) for LCDs. Most LCDs have a 16ms response time, and even 12ms earns the accolade “blazing”.
The 005’s resolution (1920×1080p) and contrast ratio are very good, but can also be found in competitive products such as the LTP468W by Samsung.
