A study entitled the “California Performance Review”, which was released Aug. 2, estimates that the state of California can save more than $32 billion over the next five years, by implementing a number of cost-cutting and efficiency initiatives. The CPR lists many far-ranging proposals, some of which include:
- Use of VoIP to reduce telecommunications costs (by 45-75%).
- Use of Open Source to reduce software procurement costs.
- Deployment of Wi-Fi Networks in new facilities, instead of wired connections.
- Consolidation of servers and storage, where possible.

I hope California is thinking about these proposals now. If anyplace could stand to save some money, it’s California.
I think these tips could apply to any state or nation, actually.
