Casio’s new PDA has a nice VGA (640×480) screen, but is mostly billed as being ruggedized ie shock resistant, drip-proof and dustproof.

While the DT-10’s degree of ruggedness is not up to MIL-STD-810F standards, conformity to IP54 is not bad for business use.
Oh, it also has a 416MHz processor, Windows Mobile 2003 SE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi etc, and we will probably never see it on this side of the ocean.

The new Toshiba model 37LZ150 is a fully networked 6.2 megapixel TV with connectivity to LAN, PC, external HDD/NAS, with an integrated web browser, USB port and an SD memory card slot.

That feature set by itself is unheard of for a TV, but it also notifies you when email arrives. It has digital video recording to HDD via a TiVo-style interface that they call “Face Net”. And you can send it an email from the office telling it when to start recording.
In addition to managing all of the above, the 64bit Linux OS optimizes picture quality via algorithms for color gradation and dynamic contrast enhancement.
All-in-all, the 37LZ150 is a great TV entertainment center. In searching diligently for any negatives, all I could find was the 15ms pixel response time, which, while not bad, is not quite leading edge (10-12ms).

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is credited with inventing the World Wide Web, and is thought of as being one of the 100 greatest minds of the 20th century. He gave an interview to internetnews.com recently and here’s some of what he said:

On spam and viruses:
“Another thing that makes viruses spread more rapidly is this illegal practice of forging ‘from:’ addresses in e-mails. I think SPF is something that should be more widely used to thwart e-mail address forgery.
“The technology is there to deal with this. SPF can be used right now to distinguish legitimate mail from illegal mail containing viruses before any message data is transmitted. I encourage people to use SPF because it provides the technology that works.”

Toshiba today announced three new F series models of its Gigabeat HDD-based MP3 players. One of the models is the F60 which has a 60-gigabyte capacity on a 1.8-inch hard disk drive.

The F60 is very close to market-leader iPod in terms of size and weight, but offers 20GB more capacity and a not-bad QVGA screen. The price of the F60 is expected to be much higher than the iPod.

The Japan Times is reporting the discovery of a Yakuza manual with tips on how to carry out various crimes. The 206-page book, titled “Special Top Secret Information,” covers more than 100 items on successfully committing crimes.
Topics include:
The best time for purse-snatching: economic recessions.
How to borrow money from loan sharks without having to pay interest.
How to break into cars without special tools.
This stuff seems pretty mild & I always thought the Yakuza were heavy-hitters. Maybe Volume 2 will cover more advanced topics like: cargo theft, fraud, kidnapping and protection payments.

The Hi-End Show Tokyo 2004 ends today (Sept 26). Intended for dedicated audiophiles, it bills itself as the “Most friendly audio show”.
One of the exhibits at the show was an unusual set of speakers. Dubbed the “Frog’ this set of speakers measures 1.7 meters high x 1.0 meters wide and a half meter deep.

Not much available in the way of specs, except the following: “we adopted a unique design”, the speakers are “forceful” and that each pair of speakers costs about $66,500.
