New Uses for Your Smartphone

by GadgetManiac on September 12, 2004

Silk Webware Ltd has developed some interesting software for your phone. The first application turns your Smartphone into a mosquito repeller …

Mellow Mosquito, shown above, operates on the theory is that female mosquitoes bite humans during their breeding period. During that time females try to avoid male mosquitoes, and Mellow Mosquito emulates the sound of the male (450 – 600 Hz) to keep females away.

[Gadgetmaniac disclaimer: Wayne J. Crans, Associate Research Professor in Entomology at Rutgers University states that: "Scientific studies have repeatedly shown that electronic mosquito repellers do not prevent host seeking mosquitoes from biting. In most cases, the claims made by distributors border on fraud. Mated female mosquitoes do not flee from amorous males, and mosquitoes do not vacate an area hunted by dragonflies. Electronic mosquito repellers do little in the way of reducing mosquito annoyance. "]

A second interesting app is Enlighten. This piece of software turns your Smartphone into an emergency flashlight by causing the screen to emit the maximum amount of light possible … this sounds practical, but it must be tough on battery life, though.

A third application from Silk Webware for your Smartphone recreates some of the sounds of nature …

Tranquilizer, shown above, generates six different continuous natural sounds intended, I suppose, to sooth your furrowed brow. The “Stream”, for example, generates the sound of water gurgling over rocks. This sounds relaxing, but one has to wonder if the small speaker in a Smartphone can generate enough frequency response and output power in order to emulate such complex noises accurately.
