Supercomputer Title

The TOP500 list was created in 1993 to assemble and maintain a list of the 500 most powerful computer systems in the world. The current title holder is the Earth-Simulator designed to simulate earthquakes built by NEC and containing 5120 processors and operating at 35.86 teraflops, or trillions of calculations per second.

IBM will today announce a new version of its Blue Gene/L supercomputer which runs at a new record of 36.01 teraflops.

Blue Gene/LUsing Blue Gene for modeling of G Protein-Coupled Receptors (GPCR) in a membrane environment. GPCRs are a factor in congestive heart failure, hypertension, stroke, cancer, ulcers and allergies.

i hope the earth simulator will eventually allow scientists to be able to predict earthquakes accurately.
