Anandtech has just published an extremely detailed (18 pages of charts and graphs) review of 3 small form-factor digital cameras: The Canon PowerShot S410, the Casio Exilim Ex-Z40, and the Pentax Optio S40. All 3 cameras have 3x optical zoom and 4 megapixel output.
In summary, they recommend the Canon S410, and conclude their review with the following comments:
“In the end, we had to choose the Canon PowerShot S410 as the best camera of the bunch. It produces bright, colorful, well-exposed, and sharp pictures very consistently. The Pentax Optio S40 would be our second choice”.

I’d never heard of Anandtech before this, but they really do detailed reviews. I’d love to see more of their work.
It sounds like, even after 18 pages’ worth of data, they had a tough time choosing between the Pentax Optio S40 and the Canon PowerShot S410.
