Einstein@Home

November 24th, 2004

By GadgetManiac

Einstein@Home is a new share-your-computer-for-the-sake-of-science project. Instead of looking for aliens (SETI@home), this time you would be looking for gravity waves.

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from rapidly rotating neutron stars, known as pulsars. Scientists believe that some pulsars may not be perfectly spherical, and if so, they should emit characteristic gravitational waves, which LIGO and GEO 600 will begin to detect in coming months.

Spyware Removal Tools

November 23rd, 2004

By GadgetManiac

Arstechnica has a nice review of 5 new spyware removal tools:

  • Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Spyware Eliminator
  • Spyware Doctor
  • SpySubtract PRO
  • Ad-Aware SE 6 Personal
  • They discuss the pro’s and con’s of the various products and conclude the article with the following remarks:

Other than a few minor quibbles, Ad-Aware is simply the best at what it does. It’s fast, it’s effective, and it’s free. Few pieces of software can claim those qualities. We can easily recommended AdAware without reservation.

NIAC Phase I Call for Proposals, CP 05-01

    November 21st, 2004

    By GadgetManiac

The NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) has just issued their 2005 call for proposals. According to their website:

“The NIAC is particularly interested in receiving proposals for innovative and visionary concepts that could make significant leaps beyond current plans and programs for aerospace endeavors and be supportive of the recently announced NASA goals for human and robotic exploration of the solar system.”

The NIAC motto is inspiring: “Don’t let your preoccupation with reality stifle your imagination.”NIAC Propulsion
Therefore, my suggestion is that some (brave) individual submit a proposal for a propulsion system based on that hypothetical particle called the tachyon. I say “brave” because most physicists dismiss tachyons with phrases like “Tachyons are taken seriously by few physicists, because of the paradoxes they create, and because nearly all experiments specifically searching for tachyons have turned up negative.” However, tachyons do not seem to be forbidden by Quantum Mechanics, and there seems to be at least some support for the concept here, and here.

The proposals are due February 14, 2005.
