According to CNET, the Next Big Thing is the Samsung HLR6768W 67-inch DLP HDTV – the world’s largest DLP at 67″ and the first 1080p DLP.
CNET says that the main virtues of the HLR6768W include:
The screen is 6 inches larger than Samsung’s previous king of the DLP hill, but it’s the higher resolution (thanks to a new Texas Instruments chip) that piques our interest: the 1,920×1,080 resolution will display every pixel of the highest-resolution HD broadcasts and is more than twice as sharp as that of past DLP sets.
While the HLR6768W was designated Best In Show, other, presumably smaller Big Things include the following:
Samsung i730
The i730 phone won in the category of Cell Phones & Handhelds. The features of the Samsung SCH-i730 include the following:
- smart phone based on Windows Mobile 2003
- slider design /w QWERTY keyboard
- 128MB of flash memory + 64MB of SDRAM
- CDMA (800/1,900) /w EVDO
Samsung YH-820

This MP3 player won in the category of Portable Audio & Video. Its features include:
- 5GB hdd
- small size 2×3.5×0.6 in
- 1.6-inch color screen
These Next Big Thing awards from CNET seem to overlap with, and in some cases duplicate and conflict with, CES’ own CES Innovations 2005 Awards Honorees. For example, CNET nominated the LG VX8000 EVDO flip-phone as best in the category of CELL PHONES AND HANDHELDS, whereas from the CES 2005 perspective, the VX8000 has already lost to the Motorola Razr V3.
Apparently, CNET N-B-T candidates were evaluated on the basis of their ability to enrich/excite/delight their users, their pioneering-ness and those intangibles like ‘wow’ and cachet … among other things.
