The 2005 edition of the International Consumer Electronics Show opened today in Las Vegas. The CES runs from January 6-9, and is billed as the world’s largest ( ..including CeBIT?..) annual technology tradeshow.

Consumer Electronics is hot.The CEA estimates that U.S. sales of consumer electronics will exceed $125 billion this year (up 11% over 2004) …. thats a lot of gadgets. Amazon indicated last month that sales of consumer electronics surpassed book sales for the first time.

The largest exhibitor at CES this year is Samsung, with 25,000 square feet of floor space and hundreds of products. Samsung’s press releases make note of some of those products:

  • 102″ Plasma TV
  • 70″ DLP TV with 1080p resolution
  • LCD TV with LED backlight
  • Blu-ray Disc recorders and players
  • World’s first 6″ DMB TV
  • Pocket watch MP3 player
  • Worlds first 5M-pixel camera phone

Samsung won twelve CES Innovation Awards, for such items as the company’s 46 inch LCD TV with LED backlights, and 40 inch LCD TV with flat panel backlight.

I didn’t realize that the Blu-Ray went all the way back to 2005. I think that the Blu-Ray really would have caught on had it not been for streaming video.

I’m amazed it wasn’t until 2005 that electronics outsold books. Those numbers must be really lopsided now.
