LG Electronics is the second largest consumer electronics manufacturer in Korea, and has quite a large presence at CES 2005. LG won sixteen CES 2005 Innovation Awards for its products, including the following:
- LG FLATRON L1730S – this LCD monitor won a couple of awards for innovation. The awards made note of the L1730S’ quick response time and its f-Engine picture-enhancing chip. At a response time of 12 milliseconds the device is good, but not great. Regarding the f-Engine chip, it’s supposed to improve sharpness by managing the relationship between brightness and contrast … however, neither CES nor LG seem to provide any numbers to back that up. With its better than average response time and its relatively low price of $499, the unit does seem intended for movies and games.
Hmm, not sure what these people are watching..

Gadgetmaniac commentary: The Flatron L1730S seems like a good monitor, and will probably do well at that price. However, there seem to be some dissenting voices around and about …
- X-bit Labs in “Closer Look at 17in LCD Monitor Features“, reviewed the L1730S, and while they liked the color reproduction, they were not as kind towards the responsiveness or the contrast.
- While Trusted Reviews did not review the “S”, they did have a look at a similar product, the L1730P. They were not overly impressed, giving it an overall rating of 7/10, and only 6/10 on image quality. The article did however provide an explanation of the f-Engine chip, which seems to be a kind of combo brightness and contrast control. They concluded their review with the words:
Now even though LG states that the L1730P is a 12ms monitor and motion smearing was on the whole difficult to detect, watching the movie was not a good experience.
