In a world’s first, TU Media Corp will start test broadcasts of commercial TV services for mobile phones via satellite in Korea today. TU expects to begin full commercial operation on May 1, 2005. In the test period starting today, TU will provide three video and six radio channels.

The operating satellite was launched early last year by Mobile Broadcasting Corporation. See this link for a description of MBCo’s services..

The end user must have a mobile phone equipped with a satellite receiver, such as:-

A passenger watches a program transmitted via satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) on her cell phone after the test run was launched on Monday.
The SCH-B100, which is a two megapixel EV-DO cameraphone with a tuner for receiving satellite TV broadcasts. The phone as a 320×320 pixel, 262K color LCD main display and a 128×128 pixel 64K secondary display, and an RS-MMC memory card slot.

Satellite radio broadcasting using S-band has been offered in the United States for a number of years by XM Radio and Sirius. This new service will be the first to broadcast multimedia, including TV, radio and data programs.
