Motorola’s been busy these last few days, launching a total of 8 new phones. Two of the new models are stripped-down versions of the Motorola SLVR V8, which was launched less than a month ago. They are the SLVRlite V270 and the SLVRcam V280. Motorola’s clearly been working on their brand strategy and product positioning vis-a-vis market segmentation. These 2 new phones will have a lower price point and will coat-tail on the brand recognition of the RAZR and the SLVR. To arrive at the new models, they took the original SVLR V8 form factor and slimmed it down a bit, both size and weight-wise. They achieved this by throwing away the SLVR’s MP3 player, EDGE capabilities and the Trans Flash card reader. Motorola also removed 47% of the pixels, by going from a resolution of 176×220 to 128×160. Finally, the V280 got to keep the SLVR’s VGA camera, but the V270 did not. Motorola’s reaching for a price of less than $50 for these models. Other new Motorola phones are: . V176 . V235 . V360 . V557 . V1050 . V1150 . Motorola product announcements.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad T43 [ that string of words still does not sound quite right ] continues in the ThinkPad tradition, by being black, understated, and with an outstanding keyboard. The T43 is small and relatively light at about 12 x 10 x 1 inch and just over 5 pounds. It has the new Centrino/Sonoma chipsets, PCI Express, up to 80GB of hdd and a maximum resolution of 1400×1050 pixels. ThinkPad T43 - product homepage
This recent sale of the IBM Thinkpad division to Lenovo is a win-win situation. Its good for IBM, because each ThinkPad has been sold at a loss up to now, not unlike the situation over at GM and Ford. And the deal is very good for Lenovo – some projections have Lenovo in the number one spot in terms of revenue by the end of the decade. The IBM-Lenovo signing ceremony is pictured in the sidebar – Lenovo Chairman Liu Chuanzhi and IBM VP John Joyce formalized the transaction on Dec 8, 2004. Lenovo buys IBM’s PC unit for $1.25 billion
