The DARPA Grand Challenge final event for 2005 will be held tomorrow: Saturday, October 8. Twenty three driverless vehicles will compete for the $2 million prize, which will be awarded to the one that completes the entire 132 mile course in under 10 hours. One of the entries is this tricked-out Hummer from Carnegie-Mellon University’s, Red Team Racing:
The H1ghlander, as the Red Team’s entry is dubbed, has a Caterpillar engine control module, TTTech controllers for the brakes & transmission, Applanix inertial, GPS and odometry data processors, and also has seven laser range scanners and seven Intel Pentium-M processors for terrain modeling and hazard avoidance … kewl! I’d be curious to see if driverless racing could ever take off as a sport. I think people would miss the human connection.
I hope we don’t get to the point where most of our pro-athletes are robots.
If we did have all robotic sports teams, at least we wouldn’t have to worry about lockouts anymore.
