Google’s 300 Year Project

by GadgetManiac on October 21, 2005

Google estimates that there are 5 million terabytes of information in the world, and that it might take another 300 years to complete the task of indexing everything.

Eric Schmidt, Google CEO in a talk at the Association of National Advertisers on October 8 2005, estimated that only 2-3% of the world’s info is currently indexed and searchable.

We at GadgetManiac are beginning to think that Google might be serious about their stated goal, which is : “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful“.

It’s fascinating to think of knowledge and information in quantifiable terms. Somehow I think Google will get there much sooner than 300 years from now.

I have a 300-year project, too. It’s called cleaning the garage. Hey, I’m here all week!
