If the question is – which LCD monitor delivers the most accurate color reproduction? … then the answer is – the new SpectraView 2180WG-LED by NEC, at least according to Tom’s Hardware Guide. The high fidelity of the 2180WG is thanks to the use of LED backlighting … instead of those cold cathode fluorescent lamps normally used by LCDs.
Tom says that “superiority (of the color rendering) is overwhelming”, thus making it the ideal monitor for apps such as photo retouching.
Alas, the pixel response time, which ranges up to 36 ms, makes it a poor choice for video, and an even worse one for games.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of those cold cathode fluorescent lamps in the future.
LED’s are so much more energy-efficient it’s astounding.
