Nano Body Armor

December 21st, 2005

By GadgetManiac

Tungsten Disulfide Nanotube x-section Nanotech company ApNano Materials is working on some new body and vehicle armor that is expected to be about twice as strong as what is now available. This new armor will be made from Tungsten Disulfide (WS2) that is formed as nanotubes as depicted in the image. The layering process produces excellent shock absorbing properties and should withstand a steel projectile with a velocity of 1.5 km/second.

This new armor will be a positive development for those who are in harm’s way, however, from a mathematical perspective, the Lotka-Volterra equations suggest that it may also have an unintended consequence in that will upset the predator-prey population dynamics via an increase the number of potential victims (by virtue of the fact that they will now be more likely to survive), and so should paradoxically lead to an increase in the number of predators.

Mona Lisa Smile

December 18th, 2005

By GadgetManiac

Many have described the Mona Lisa smile as being enigmatic. And now, emotion recognition software at the University of Amsterdam, has indeed declared that famous smile to be only 83% happy.

The enigmatic-ness must stem from the remaining 17% — the software deemed the subject to be 9% disgusted, 6% fearful and 2% angry. Interesting about Mona being 9% disgusted – that’s not immediately obvious from her face.

Sony NW-A1000 MP3 Player

December 17th, 2005

By GadgetManiac

Sony NW-A1000Trusted Reviews has just reviewed the Sony Walkman NW-A1000. They liked it, even a lot, giving the music player an 8 out of 10 – but they continue to prefer the Apple iPod.

Trusted gave the A1000 high marks for the sound quality, nice design and battery life. They dinged it for being slow and cumbersome and conclude by saying that “The nano not only looks as good, it also beats the Sony in virtually every other category”.
