The new Sony Network Walkman model NW-S706F digital music player has a nice and unusual feature, namely noise cancellation. Small microphones in the headphones pick up ambient noise, send it to the unit which in turn sends the opposite waveform back to the headphones, along with the music. The product claim is that up to 25% of the background noise can eliminated by this feature. Another good feature of the NW-S706F is the 3 minute quick charge, which in turn provides about 3 hours of playback time – a full charge provides about 50 hours of music playback.
All-in-all it’s a nice 4GB capacity MP3 player, with FM reception, but it’s pricey and almost twice as bulky as the Apple iPod nano…the S706F weighs in with a volume of approximately 41,037 cubic mm vs 23,822 cubic mm for the nano. The device is not likely to sell well except maybe in it’s domestic market of Japan.
Here’s a minor suggestion for Sony — ditch the appellation “Network“, consider retiring the word “Walkman” & avoid alphanumeric product labels.

Noise cancellation sounds great. I’d like to cancel the noise every time all my kids are inside.
3 hours for 3 minutes of recharging is a great system, especially when you’re in a pinch.
