The Tech section in today’s Wall Street Journal describes the enduring myth of the all-in-one converged device that does everything, and the current contender for that title, the Apple iPhone.
The author notes the various unsatisfactory devices that he’s used over the last while and expresses hope the the iPhone will be ”the one”…the Swiss Army knife of the gadget world.

We all want this “Swiss Army knife of the gadget world”. No one wants to carry all the devices with, MP3 player, mobile phone, internet communicator… if you could have it all in one.
It will be a while before we completely get there, but there’s not question in my mind that we will have such a device in the next decade.
I think you have to define “everything” in terms of what a universal widget can do before we can figure out how close we are to one.
