Blu-ray vs. HD DVD – continued

by GadgetManiac on March 8, 2007

LG BH100Walt Mossberg weighs in on the high-definition optical disk format wars, that have seen Blu-ray battle HD DVD to a kind of a stand-off. He says he can’t see any qualitative difference in the 2 formats, and expresses disappointment that the 2 sides haven’t settled their differences.

Mossberg’s tried 1 of the few players that supports both formats, the LG BH100, and indicates that while the machine worked well, it was unable to handle the HD-DVD extras menu.

The bottom line: don’t commit to either format until such time as the principal players adopt universal players, or at least universal discs.

I didn’t realize that Blu-Ray and HD DVD were so similar in viewing quality. What factor really gave Blu-ray the edge, then?

for one thing, the name “blu-ray” just sounds cooler and more advanced than an “hd-dvd.”
