D-Wave Quantum Computer Redux

by GadgetManiac on March 12, 2007

D-Wave Quantum Computer cryopump required to maintain a temperature of 5mK

That quantum computer cobbled together & demo’d by D-Wave Systems last month just got a big boost in credibility from an unexpected source. While some/many had suggested that the QC was a fake, it now turns out that NASA’s JPL unit Microdevices Laboratory fabricated the quantum chip on spec from D-Wave.

As noted, some seemed to feel that the QC demo was rigged, and that there might well have been some guy in some back room somewhere with an abacus feeding results to the QC. While NASA’s involvement in the process doesn’t necessarily prove that quantum mechanics were in play, confidence levels are up.

D-Wave has a good 78-page synopsis of the demo of their Quantum Computer that was held in Mountain View CA on February 13 - it’s available at Technology Demonstration…it’s in PDF format.

I keep rooting for the quantum computer. I’d love for there to be home versions eventually!
