hard-disk-head-crash.jpgCarnegie Mellon University studied about 100,000 failed disks from 4 different vendors and were able to conclude that their observed failure rates are higher than that specified in manufacturer’s data sheets.

The study states that the Annualized Failure Rate for disks can be expected to range between 0.58% to 0.88%, based on product claims. Their observations, however indicate that disks may need to be replaced at rates up to 15 times greater than expected.
