Samsung Q1-Ultra UMPC

CeBIT, the world’s largest computer show is now on in Germany and runs Mar 15-21. One of the items that will debut at CeBIT2007 is the next-gen Samsung Q1-Ultra UMPC, a follow-on to the moderately successful original Q1 that was launched at CeBIT2006.

The new Q1 Ultra Ultra Mobile PC (so nice, they named it twice) now runs Windows Vista (Home Premium), memory has been doubled to 1GB and while the screen on the Q1 stays at 7 inches, the resolution has been improved to 1024×600. The press release describes the device as a five-fer, combining the functionality of a PDA, HDD, navigation, PMP and a tablet PC into one device.

Other improvements to be found in the Q1-Ultra include a reduction in size and weight (down 11% to 690 gr) and more disk space. The Q1-Ultra also has a split-QWERTY keyboard…so actually it’s a QWERT keyboard, with a YUIOP keyboard off to the right.

Seems like UMPC manufacturers are expecting to move about 700,000 units world-wide in 2007…decidedly niche.

I had no idea CeBIT was the world’s largest computer show. I might be booking a flight to Germany sometime soon.
