Lawrence Probst soon to be ex-CEO of Electronic Arts Inc shares some of his views on state of the videogame market through an interview with the Wall Street Journal…
-Probst observes that while the Sony PlayStation 3 is quite expensive (the console + cables + some games might end up setting you back $800-900), they throw in a high-def Blu-ray player for free.
-He estimates that in-game advertising will be a $100M opportunity.
-The best-selling game in the US in 2006 by far, with 6.5 million copies sold was Madden NFL 07. EA has similar high hopes for their forthcoming games Spore, Command and Conquer and Army of Two.
-sez Probst: “Will Wright’s our Steven Spielberg. …we think he’s on a terrific trajectory with Spore” (…hmm..sounds like marketing-speak to us…)
…Electronic Arts has done well under Probst, having gone up 33X during his tenure, and despite accusations of being demographically-challenged and not being as edgy as Grand Theft Auto, ERTS has consistently out-performed TTWO. …can’t figure out why they’re getting rid of the guy…

i hope in-game ads are just product placements. i don’t want a game to stop so i can watch a commercial.
