
Well, Apple’s new iPhone goes on sale in a few days. It’ll either be a success, or a failure, or, more likely…somewhere in-between. We’re guessing that the device will be a modest hit, largely because of co$t.
It’s been amusing reading Fake Steve Jobs skewer both friends and foes of the iPhone – FSJ is a great satirist up there with Stephen Colbert, except perhaps when he digresses into topics such as global warming and Detroit’s market share.
In any event, techno-guru Walt Mossberg has deigned to share his opinion of the iPhone that he’s used for a couple of weeks now…he sez the iPhone is “a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer” and a “pleasure to use”.
And David Pogue over at the New York Times has both a positive article entitled “The iPhone Matches Most of Its Hype ” and a fairly amusing accompanying video
We were originally going to be somewhat negative of the iPhone mainly because of a bias against device convergence and the complexity embodied in typical smartphones interfaces as explained in a good article in The New Yorker entitled “Feature Presentation“.
However the 2 glowing reviews noted above have pretty well knocked the props out from the usability argument, leaving mostly the unit’s total cost of ownership as per the high purchase price, and the rate plans . …we’re saving our pennies.
