High-tech indicators chart from Technology-based Competitiveness of 33 Nations by Georgia Tech

According to a study by the Technology Policy and Assessment Center of the Georgia Institute of Technology, China’s Technological Standing as estimated by Georgia Tech has increased from 22.5 in 1996 to 82.8 in 2007, the #1 position. By comparison the US peaked at 95.4 in 1999; it is now down to 76.1.

Good news for China, but not so good for the United States. How did this happen? …it looks like research & development has followed design & engineering, which in turn followed low labor rates, to the far east.

And after sales & marketing are also outsourced, nice catchphrases such as “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China” will become just “Made in China”.

I bet three years later this difference is even more pronounced.

I knew the U.S. had dropped off somewhat, but that dropoff rate is astounding to me.
