Blu-ray Seems to be Winning

Blu-ray ladies

The high definition optical disc format wars between Blu-ray and HD DVD always seemed to be fairly even…

…one side would pull ahead with cheaper players, and then the other side would counter with more movies. Higher fidelity vs more endorsements, and so on.

So it came as a genuine surprise to read that, at least in Japan, Blu-ray players outsell HD DVD players by a wide margin…on the order of 97% to 3%. The same article goes on to state that Blu-ray also has a 19% share of the total video player market and that share is accelerating.

Lends some credance to the following prediction in Hollywood Reporter…

Prediction: Blu-ray blows away HD DVD - HR, Dec 21, 2007

I don’t think any hardware will be able to compete with streaming video/on-demand services much longer.
