Toshiba today announced two new media players, model T802 and the V81.
The gigabeat T802 is a 2.4 inch QVGA 8GB memory PMP – access is via 802.11b/c Wi-Fi to various hotspots such as NTT Mzone, and to GyaO a free ad-supported video streaming service.
For those willing to spend more, the gigabeat V81 offers a 3.5 inch QVGA 8GB memory + 16GB SDHC card combo PMP & TV via access to the 1seg TV broadcasting network, plus recording.
…Toshiba’s Digital Products division can’t seem to catch a break. First with SED TV and then with HD DVD. A while ago, Microsoft pulled out of a partnership with Tosh and went their own way with the Zune portable media player. And these 2 new gigabeat players from Toshiba bring the total number of models in their lineup to 18, with many overlapping/similar products. And the last time we checked, the top selling player in the Japan home market was the iPod nano 2GB with a 13.1% market share…followed by 3 other iPod models, a couple of Walkman models from Sony, another iPod, something from Sharp etc. ie not a gigabeat to be found in the top 15 players.
