Solid State Drives OK but not Great

by GadgetManiac on February 8, 2008

Walt Mossberg ran some tests on some solid-state drives (SSD) that are viewed as eventually replacing those ubiquitous hard disk drives (HDD) found in most computers.

Walt sez- you can ignore SSDs for now. Why? -because they’re still very expensive and provide mostly marginal benefits in speed.

SSD advantages over HDD include longer battery life, less weight, and faster read/write times, with cost being the main disadvantage. Walt tested some notebooks and found that at least for the MacBook Air, battery life and speed differences between the HDDD and SSD versions were not important.

Interesting assessment. I’m curious when the big SSD breakthrough will be. My guess is it will happen soon.

I think SSD would’ve broken through a lot sooner had it not been for its cost.
