Sony Ericsson revealed a number of new phones at The Mobile World Congress 2008 Barcelona today, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. The device is the first Windows Mobile offering from S/E, who is usually in the Symbian camp, of which it is part-owner.
The press release for the Xperia X1 positions the phone as a “premium mobile experience” – the word premium is used 5x in the blurb. The premium-ness seems to stem from the 3 inch 800×480 WVGA touch screen, integrated Assisted GPS, the arc-slider wide-pitch QWERTY keyboard and Auto-focus 3.2 megapixel camera enclosed in a metal body.
Xperia X1 connectivity is via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS 850, UMTS 900, UMTS 1700, UMTS 1900, UMTS 2100.
Compared to the Apple iPhone, the X1 is bigger (+22%) & heavier, but is much more pixelicious, works on more networks, has a better camera, delivers DVD-quality video (800×480 @ 30fps) and has a full QWERTY keyboard. No price announced, but it’s not going to be for the cost-averse.
