The mythical paperless office may be becoming a bit more real. The New York tells the story of some individuals and organizations who are using less paper, thanks largely to scanners. The article states that worldwide paper consumption per person has stabilized in recent years, and has actually fallen 6% in the wealthiest countries in the last few years. Would that it were thus, the environmental benefits would be many – but the piece does make note of the power requirements of these digital replacements for paper.
…we’re skeptical largely because the demise of paper has been predicted for so long, but as a result of this article, G-M is officially upgrading our expectation that the future will indeed be paperless, from ‘Yeah Right’ to ‘Maybe’. …nice graphic tho

There’s not only the power requirements to consider, but also the more elctronic devices are use the more electronic refuse that’s created when people throw these devices away.
I’ve visited a few offices recently, and I’ve noticed a conspicuous lack of paper. We may be on the cusp now.
