Low-tech Cooling

Auto parts manufacturer Denso Corporation plans to use snow mass accumulated during winter to chill its parts plant in Chitose, Japan. Denso hopes to reduce power consumption at the facility, and slash both costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Plus ça change…that’s how the old-time Iceboxes worked. Now if there were only some way to store the heat of summer and use it in the winter time.

This is a great idea. It also solves the problem of what to do with huge piles of snow that become safety hazards.
