Canon IXUS 960 IS

Trusted Reviews reviews the Canon IXUS 960 IS point-and-shoot compact digital camera, gives it a 9 out of 10 and says the thing “is easily the best 12MP compact on the market, and a sound investment for anyone who can afford it”.

They liked the camera’s look-and-feel with its titanium body, the image quality, performance, and the image stabilization system. They were less thrilled with the price, the optical viewfinder & the operation of the battery door.

Blu-ray Not Ready for Prime-Time, yet

March 25th, 2008

By GadgetManiac

The Mercury News reminds us against buying a Blu-ray player just now. Despite the end to the format wars (HD DVD lost), it’s better to wait for a while because:

  • More/better/cheaper Blu-ray players are on the way.
  • Profile 2.0 (aka BD-Live) will have Internet connectivity
  • Only about 500 Blu-ray movies are available now.
  • You just might be happy with an upconverting DVD player instead.
  • Thinking Blu-ray? Don’t rush – Mercury News, 03/24/2008

    Tech Podcasts

Tech Crunch lists some podcasts hosted by geek chicks, and offers the opinion that Webb Alert with Morgan Webb is the best…

Next up at number 2 is GeekBrief.TV hosted by Cali Lewis…

And in third place, and our current fav, is Mahalo Daily with Veronica Belmont…

Others on the TechCruch posting include Loaded with Natali Del Conti, Pop17 and Sarah Meyers, MobLogic.TV avec Lindsay Campbell, Mobuzz.TV featuring Susan Hickey, and (the we-don’t-get-it) 1938Media.

Curiously missing from the TC list are Sarah Lacy from tech ticker:

    …and Joanne Colan of Rocketboom:

And there’s also the mildly-tech BBC Click’s Kate Russell, and NN.

    The Best MP3 Players

    March 24th, 2008

    By GadgetManiac

PC World ranks the top 10 flash based MP3 players:
Creative Zen media player with 32GB of memory plus SD slot
    1. Creative ZEN (score: 83)
    2. Creative Zen V Plus (80)
    3. Apple iPod Nano (79)
    4. Apple iPod Touch (79)
    5. iRiver Clix Gen 2 (78)
    6. SanDisk Sansa Connect (77)
    7. Samsung YP-P2 (75)
    8. Microsoft Zune 8GB Red (75)
    9. SanDisk Sansa View (75)
    10. SanDisk Sansa e280 (74)

The PCW evaluation consisted of 4 components: Pricing, Performance, Features and Design. While the Creative Zen lost out to the Apple Touch in the Design category, it handily beat out the 2 Apples in the significant Features category.

…the above is quite a different list from that out of CNet … guess the quest for the best goes on.

2008 World Car of the Year = Mazda2

    March 24th, 2008

    By GadgetManiac

Mazda2 aka Demio ... ya think the preponderance 520–570-nm wavelengths are intended to convey some kinda message?

The World Car of the Year (WCOTY) program just awarded their Overall Car of the Year for 2008 to the Mazda2 (aka Mazda Demio) at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

Excuses, uh reasons, given include “Consumers will be drawn to the new Mazda compact because of its very appealing looks and high levels of standard equipment for the price”.

…ugh…but they partly redeemed themselves by awarding the Audi R8 with the World Design of the Year and the World Performance Car awards. The final category, World Green Car, was won by the BMW 118d for its fuel efficiency.
