RapLeaf recently reviewed some demographic data from a few social networks and found that users are mostly female and young. They surveyed 22 million users on Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, Plaxo and Hi5 and discovered that 62% are female and about two-thirds are below 26 years of age. LinkedIn was the only social network that had a preponderance of males.
Some thus take the stereotypical view that females are more relationship driven and communication oriented, and males are living in their parents basement while trying to optimize the frame rate for Crysis.

These results are intriguing. I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if two years later you’d find that the male-female social networking split is even and a lot more older people are using these sites.
Yes, I believe this data is really out of date now. That’s how fast social networking is changing.
I think social media appeals to everyone who enjoys talking about himself or herself, which is pretty much everyone!
