Sony DSC-W170 digital camera

Walt Mossberg sidekick Katherine Boehret reviews some cameras that aid and abet revisionist photography. The cameras are the Sony DSC-W170, Kodak Z1085 IS and the Olympus FE-340. The features in question include red eye correction, face detection and smile correction.

The Sony DSC-W170 is the only 1 of the 3 cameras that finds smiles in the image, and allows the photographer to alter them. The user can not only change frowns to smiles, but also adjust the degree of smileyness from level 1 to 5, thanks to a feature called Happy Face, as illustrated below…

Sony is expected to continue this trend and is rumored to be working on a camera that takes the subject out of the loop entirely…

the idea of changing a frown to a smile is bizarre, though it’d be useful for photos of me with my girlfriend’s parents. those photos are frowns all around!

I’d hate to think what someone who didn’t like me could do to a picture of my face.
