Well, the first ad for Microsoft starring Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld, aired yesterday. Much head-scratching ensued, as the advertisement appeared to “be about nothing”, as per the famous Seinfeld sit-com of 1989-1998. No Microsoft products or services of any kind were mentioned in the ad, although the company logo appeared briefly at the end.

The quirky piece by Crispin Porter + Bogusky of Burger King fame, shows Gates & Seinfeld struggling to find the right shoe size in a discount shoe store; it ends with the words “The future. Delicious.” and suggests that in the future, computers would be “moist and chewy like cakes, so we can just eat ‘em while we’re working”.

…might mean that MS will be launching some metered/ad-based/free, Cloud/Web x.0/Saas mashup product, thus implementing parts of Steve Ballmer’s Fifth Computing Revolution.

…yeah, sure…as if we knew anything.

I think that Microsoft got exactly what they were looking for with this ad; people to talk about Microsoft. Yes, I will admit the commercial was truly about nothing, but if you look around the blogoshpere today you will notice that people are stirred up about this.

    Microsoft wins on this one.

Hopefully they will take some swings toward Apple in the near future. Hopefully they don’t miss.
