Google Chrome

September 1st, 2008

Google launches its new web browser called appropriately enough Google Chrome on 9/02/2008 in 100 countries.

Google Chrome is based on the WebKit open source rendering engine, the same one used by Android. Chrome incorporates a JavaScript virtual machine from V8.

For a somewhat pessimistic perspective on the prospects for Chrome, see Who cares about Chrome. IE6 Has 25% Market Share … the author is predicting a tough slog for CR mainly based on customer inertia. The counter argument of course is the 20% market share garnered by Firefox which demonstrates the viability of open source web browsers. But then there’s IE 8, and so the browser wars continues.

The non-risk-averse can find Google Chrome on the Google home page or download it at this link.

We’ve been waiting on Google Chrome’s widgets for forever. In a day I have tested 6 of them and am awed with the plug ins. Mozilla Firefox has always lagged and the extensions are a welcome change.
