Bill Gates proposes to suppress hurricanes via the cooling of ocean surface temperatures. Giant floating tubs, aka Salter Sinks, are to be deployed in the Gulf of Mexico in the path of hurricanes. Ocean waves spilling over the sides of each Salter Sink will force warm surface waters to colder depths. Theoretically, it should work if they can get the water temperature to below 26.5 °C (79.7 °F). Good luck with that.

It sounds like science fiction. It would be interesting to see if Microsoft will try to build one of these systems, however.

Bill Gates and Kevin Costner should team up to fight hurricanes and oil spills, like Batman and Robin fight crime.
