curve_8520_large3If you’re a BlackBerry user, you probably have your device set up to fetch your email periodically — but you may be missing out on some of the most powerful features available for your mobile device.

What is BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)?

Out of the box, BlackBerry devices can fetch your email through your mobile carrier using a service known as BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). This simple service is designed for personal email, but as a business user, you may quickly find BIS falls short of your most important needs.

There’s some distinct limitations to using BIS to manage your email:

  1. Only your email can be synced. There’s no love for your calendars,
contacts, tasks, and notes. Any changes you make to these otherwise
useful tools on your device will not be updated on your desktop.
  2. Reconciliation is one-way. Only messages read on your device will be
marked as read with your desktop. Any messages read the other way, on
your desktop or server, will appear as unread on your device. It can be
tedious and time-consuming to constantly manage two out-of-sync
    inboxes.
  3. Syncing is slow. Emails deleted from your server or desktop may take as
long an hour and a half to delete from the device.

These limitations of BIS can make it difficult to stay organized, especially for serious business users.

Fortunately, there is a much better solution: BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES).

What is BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES)?yellowbox

BES works with a hosted Microsoft Exchange account to deliver true two-way push email to your BlackBerry device. Syncing is instantaneous, so you’ll never miss a critical email again.

Two-way Email Reconciliation

Email synchronization with BES goes further. If you mark a message as read or move it to another folder, two-way synchronization reconciles the changes back and forth from your device to the server and your desktop. You’ll always have an up-to-date inbox no matter where or how you check your email.

But BES goes way beyond just email.

Hosted Exchange with BES

With a Hosted Exchange account and BES, you can synchronize all your Calendars, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes between your mobile device and desktop computers.

Unlike BIS, BES allows you to use the full power of these collaboration tools to manage your time and business anywhere on your mobile device. Anything you do will be instantly synced two-way with your desktop and mobile device via the Hosted Exchange server. With a hosted account, all of your information is available from anywhere, at any time.

Why Hosted Exchange?

BES with a Hosted Exchange account makes it possible to do nearly everything you can with Microsoft Outlook from your mobile device. Your Hosted Exchange account allows multiple mailboxes to be consolidated to one secure server for safer and more reliable service. You can even add users to your hosted domain and sync and collaborate with this data.

Sync Calendars and Meetings

Syncing calendars and meetings is one of the most powerful advantages of BES for business users. With a Hosted Exchange account, you can send, receive, and reply to meeting requests on your mobile device, which updates your calendar automatically and notifies other attendees. Just like being in the office, you’ll always be in touch with full power to manage your day, no matter where you are.

Contacts on the Go

Meet a new business contact? Just add them to your phone, and their contact information is securely pushed back to the server and synced with your desktop. No more worry about losing their information, or fumbling for business cards when you need a phone number or an address. When your contacts are linked through Hosted Exchange, you’ll always have your entire contact address book with you. You can also call clients directly from your device, and pinpoint locations with your device’s GPS.

Data Protection and Security

BES protects your data transmissions with military-grade 3DES encryption. This is crucial for secure business communications. You can also wirelessly back-up your device to preserve your bookmarks, personal settings, ring tones, and data. In the event of loss or theft, you can remote wipe your mobile device of all sensitive information.

Corporate Email Solutions

Hosted Exchange also offers big advantages for companies without the high cost or risk of maintaining in-house servers. Besides being more reliable and cost-effective without the need for dedicated IT resources, Hosted Exchange plans are fully backed by a technical support team, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Stay on Top With BES

The benefits of BES with Hosted Exchange over BIS are vital for any serious business user:

  1. Always have up-to-date access to all your information from anywhere,
    anytime.
  2. Effectively manage your business between your mobile device and
desktop no matter where you are, just like being in the office.
  3. Collaborate with your team members to add new contacts, sync your
calendars, and respond to meeting requests.
  4. Have the peace of mind of knowing your data is always secure and
protected, and available 24/7, independently of your office.

To increase your productivity and stay organized, leave BIS for amateurs and get BES with Hosted Exchange, the next level messaging solution for the BlackBerry.

We’re looking into when this will be upgraded as it should be in the near future.

We seem to be having problems with BIS email account going out of sync pretty frequently.

We use Exchange 2003 and ATT. The fix is to go under General Settings of BIS email account and simply save it. Once updated it runs OK for a few months then it stops.

User passwords don’t change on Exchange.
    Any ideas are appreciated. TIA

hey – thanks for your comments

Unfortunatly we can’t help troubleshoot your AT&T services – you may want to talk to your provider (AT&T).

Check out OUR (mail2web) Exchange service – we even offer a 30-DAY risk-free trial.

We even offer BES support – which is fart superior and will sync more than just webmail at near-real time.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers,
    Mels
