What is Outlook Express?

by Melissa Smich on February 12, 2010

If you haven’t used Outlook Express you might wonder how it’s different from Microsoft Office and how it works. Outlook Express is an email program that works with Internet Explore versions 4.0 to 6.0. This product is typically bundled with Microsoft Windows (Windows 98 to Windows XP). However, the product isn’t available with Windows Vista, which was replaced with “Windows Mail.”

People often get confused about the difference between Microsoft Office Outlook and Outlook Express. They assume the “Express” product is a simplified version of Office Outlook (which isn’t true). The programs are distinctly different (they have different codes). Outlook Express is compatible with POP3 and IMAP mail clients and has a built in newsreader.

Outlook Express Attachments
Microsoft Exchange uses a proprietary email formatting for attachments. This technology is called “Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format,” also known as TNEF to format. This technology works fairly well, but, at times you might have a challenge reading attachments from outside parties. Windows Mail, which is available with Vista, has resolved this issue.

Improved Security
In the past, Outlook Express was targeted for malicious viruses. The script could be opened as an attachment which made it easier for people to infect others with viruses. Also, previewing email could allow a virus to run without the user’s knowledge. Microsoft has worked hard to correct these security holes.

New versions of Outlook Express block outside images, which prevents virus infection. It also disables scripts and has strict restrictions for content transfer. The program now warns users when they’re about the open a malicious email. If you get this message, make sure to delete the email immediately.

Spellchecking Tricks
Users get confused when they aren’t able to find a spell-check in Microsoft Exchange. Currently, only the French spell checker is available. Before sending a message, open up a Microsoft Word document.

Hit control “A” to select the body of your email and hit control “V” to paste the text in a Word document. Hit the “F7” button to quickly correct spelling and grammar errors, then select and copy back into Microsoft Express. This process is fairly easy once you’ve done it a few times. Microsoft has fixed this in Vista’s Windows Live Mail.

Microsoft Express has many features that makes running a business easier and more effective. Employees can quickly plan meetings and check email on the go. Understanding a few tricks about this program ensure smooth email communication.

That seems really strange to me that it only has a French spellchecker at the moment. I wouldn’t want to use a product that isn’t tailored to my countries needs personally.

Ive tried really hard to start using Outlook (just in general) and for some reason I cant do it. I really think they made the system overcomplicated and need to simplify the whole thing.

Improved security is great but making a “for dummies” version of the service would be better if you ask me!

I am unable to use the color-coding in the text of my mail in outlook express. The color chart shows but when I try to color code a sentence , after selection, it does not work. Do I need to turn something on?

The question is does outlook calender include a feature to calculate date difference. For example, 2/4/10 to 6/4/10 equals 120 days. There is a program in groupwise software that allows you to calculate date difference. I will be using outlook at work. The feature will be a huge help if it is available. Does anyone know
