What to Look For in a Smart Phone

by Melissa Smich on March 8, 2010

A smartphone is a device that not only allows you to make and receive calls but also offers a host of other features such as the ability to edit documents and check and send emails. A smartphone is essentially a hybrid of a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) and a cell phone.

Using smartphones, you can stay one step ahead of everyone else.   This single device alone can help you manage different facets of your life from surfing the web and scheduling meetings to keeping a track of the appointments and checking email. When you use a smartphone, you are less likely to miss an important phone call or email. If you are planning to buy a smartphone, here’s a list of things that you must look out for:

  • Call features: Smartphones are mostly used for business purposes. Thus, it is important that these phones have the primary cellular phone features of call waiting, voice dialing, speakerphone and conference calls.
  • Data Plan: Several regular phones allow you to access the Internet but a smartphone should be able to able to support 3G networks and offer you better speeds.
  • Productivity Apps: Smartphones are management devices and thus, they must have organizing applications such as calendar, organizer, task lists, notes, document editing, GPS, calculators and more. Smartphones today allow users to download third-party apps to help them customize the phone as per their requirements.
  • QWERTY keyboard: Most people need a smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (similar to the one on your computer) either as physical keys or as a display on the touch screen.
  • Multimedia: The phone should have the ability to record audio and video with good clarity. Also, it should have a high resolution camera (more than 2 mega pixel).
  • Multi utility: A smartphone should be able to synchronize with your computer allowing you to increase your overall efficiency and performance.
  • Messaging: Regular cell phones can also send and receive messages but a smartphone should be able to syndicate with your professional and personal email accounts. Certain smartphones can support several email accounts and even popular instant messaging services.
  • Technical and Physical specifications: A good smartphone should be compact but still have good display. Also, the battery life should be sufficient to last for at least one whole day.

These features distinguish a smart phone from a regular cell phone and you must make sure that your smartphone is equipped with these.
