Android-Powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Finally Available In The US

by Melissa Smich on August 30, 2010

xperiaWe’ve waited long enough.  Now, finally, after an excruciating length of time, the XPERIA X10 is ready for release in the U.S.A… and we’re expecting the sleek phone to likely fly off the shelves after success in Europe.

The Android phone looks like a twin of the European design, save for a discreet AT&T stamp on the backside.  Get ready for a fully functioning smartphone and multimedia combination that is sure to impress.

Specifications

The XPERIA X10 runs Android 1.6 and has an update to version 2.1 set to come by year end.  It also has access to all of the 70,000 apps ready and waiting on the Android Market.  Any other applications that are not courtesy of Android won’t make the cut and can’t be used.  This will likely never bother you, but it is something to remember.

Running on a 1GHZ CPU, the XPERIA X10 is also a camera phone with an impressive 8.1 megapixels.  The screen has widescreen DVD capabilities and the necessary touch keypad that makes this phone an enjoyable handful.  Weighing in at only 4.8 oz. the XPERIA X10 is 1/2 inch thick and comes in black and white finishes.

Web ready, this phone also has Timescape, an application that puts all of your connectivity in one spot with interactive and sparkling features.  Media has its own application called Mediascape that does the same with your music, video and photos.

Apps that are included beyond the standard smartphone crowd are Wisepilot for all of your navigation needs, YouTube for browsing and instant uploading and TrackID to jog your memory with tiny snips of song lyrics.

Competition for Whom?

Smartphones are ever evolving, especially those with touch screens and all-in-one packages with tons of power.  The XPERIA X10 has all of this going for it, something that the iPhone and only a handful of other Android units can boast.

Once the upgrade to Android 2.1 hits this phone is destined to become a real contender.  Until then, the reviews may continue being hard on the 1.6 OS and complain a little about the UX systems that Sony Ericsson put together for this phone.

Users will love the size and feel of the screen and X10’s far reaching applications.  Android fans will feel comfortable with the OS and have a field day at the Market scoping out more and more apps.  The XPERIA X10 is sure to make loyalists happy and convert a few more users in the meantime.

But did they have to make us wait so long?

I wonder if we’ll ever get to the point where apps are universal and can be used with any device. Like you said, though, there are so many interchangeable apps out there it doesn’t really matter.

Better late than never–I wonder if the problems with Apple 4 earlier this year have made all smartphone companies a little trigger-shy.
